An Interview with 'Andre van Drunen'
Who are the band members and what do they play?
Andre van Drunen is a singer/songwriter who plays piano and ukulele. He also produces his own music.
What are the band's main influences?
Jacob Collier, Sara Bareilles, Lianne la Havas.
Are there any other interesting or amusing happenings – no matter how small – that the band have been involved with that would be of interest to those who like your music?
In 2017, I made a youtube video doing a medley of Lorde's Melodrama album while I was being painted on my face. That video made my youtube channel grow and now it has more than 100,000 views.
Where was the single/EP/album recorded and who was involved in its production?
The single was recorded entirely at my house during quarantine, and I was responsible for all the production as well.
Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or events that inspired it?
The single was inspired in a part of Sylvia Plath's book 'The Bell Jar' where the character reads a story about a fig tree and imagines that each fig represents a possible future she might have. Overwhelmed by that many different possibilities, she wants all of them so badly that she is unable to choose and they all rot and fall to the ground. Even though that was written more than 50 years ago, I relate very much with that feeling and I believe that many people today do as well.
Can you briefly describe what the song/each song is about? If you are releasing an album then either describe the thinking behind the project or choose a couple of lead tracks to focus on.
'Doubt' is my second original music to be released, and the first single of an upcoming EP called 'Not the Day I Shine'.
It is about my personal insecurities and this sentiment of unease of not being able to choose, to wonder if I actually am in the right path and struggle with social skills but at the same time knowing that music is what can amaze and fulfill me. It started only with a piano years ago but in the production I knew I wanted something more upbeat and something to dance, and putting a dance beat into bittersweet lyrics makes the song kind of ironic (dance with your insecurities).
Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP? As above, list whatever might be of relevance.
I had the main melody already in my mind for literally more than 5 years and I always loved it, but never moved forward with the lyrics because my head is great for creating melodies but terrible for creating clever lyrics (also english not being my native language does not help). Then, 2020 came and I got this 'now or never' feeling and said to myself it's time to write the lyrics. I was already halfway with it and when I read 'The Bell Jar' I knew that the theme of the fig tree story was perfect for this song that talked about my insecurities.
Please provide a one or two-line personal quote that can be attributed to a band member, about either the band themselves or the release. Obviously the more eye-catching this is the better.
Andre van Drunen is a brazilian singer/songwriter that was waiting too long for the 'right time' to take his feelings into songs and decided that 2020 is the year to start.
