An Interview with 'Medy Lema'
Who are the band members and what do they play?
How and where did you get together?
What are the band's main influences?
Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, TLC, Stevie Wonder, Usher, Pharrell, Spice Girls
Have you played any notable gigs, festivals or other events? Likewise radio or TV appearances?
I appeared on BRIT Awards 2013 alongside Conor Maynard and also auditioned for X Factor in 2016 with good reviews from judges Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger & Louis Walsh. I performed at many events over the years that includes Carnivals across the country, Liverpool Soulfest, Manchester's Mothers Against Violence event and I'm also known in the North West for street performances in Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Blackpool, Birmingham and Sheffield.
Are there any other interesting or amusing happenings – no matter how small – that the band have been involved with that would be of interest to those who like your music?
I danced for Lisa Stansfield, produced for IAMDDB, worked on set with Stormzy, worked on a movie with Years & Years lead singer Olly Alexander. Got to meet many celebrities such as Rita Ora, Stooshe, The Jacksons and many more. I also became acquainted with Misha B, Olly Alexander, Children of Zeus & MNEK.
Do you have any favourable quotes from previous reviews of the band that you'd be happy to share?
There's none that I'm aware of
Where was the single/EP/album recorded and who was involved in its production?
The song was recorded in Manchester's Z-arts located in Hulme. All vocals, productions & songwriting process was done alone with additional backing vocals and ad-libs by upcoming artist Simplici-T.
Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or events that inspired it?
This song was inspired by a disapproved feeling. I was upset at people backbiting me, when they truly should be supportive of my efforts and achievements. As for the genre, the inspiration behind the production was purely based on afro-centric style of music but adding all different elements of some of my favourite genres including synth pop, tribal afrobeat, rap, hip hop, soul, jazz, neo soul and r&b.
Can you briefly describe what the song/each song is about? If you are releasing an album them either describe the thinking behind the project or choose a couple of lead tracks to focus on.
This song is simply about people who backbite.
Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP? As above, list whatever might be of relevance.
When i started recording the native language verse, I felt somewhat embarrassed. It simply reminded me of my family a lot. I'm not very open with them, so to rap in a language in how we communicate was funny to me, but I had to step out of my comfort zone.
Please provide a one or two-line personal quote that can be attributed to a band member, about either the band themselves or the release. Obviously the more eye-catching this is the better.
Confident, creative and crafty.
