An Interview with 'Myles Morgan'

Myles Morgan announces his first 2020 release, IKYWC (I Knew You Wasn’t Coming). A pared-back ballad fusing melodic jazz riffs and soulful stoner-rock vocals. Butter-soft horns lay the way to a rolling woozy jazz track that swims through emotions of romance and tenderness whilst refined and expansive in its ambition.

Recorded at Half-ton in Cambridge with the engineering oversight of Matt Moon and producer Cody Brown. Myles Morgan makes use of a larger outfit on this track.

The forthcoming record is a follow-up to Morgan’s 2019 release ‘Left Here’ also released on Blaow Recordings Along with the single announcement, Morgan is teaming up with fledgeling label Ascension to release a limited run of vinyl later in the year.

Where was the single/EP/album recorded and who was involved in its production?

Half Ton Studios with Engineers Matty Moon and Cody Cruiz Brown.

Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or events that inspired it?

The introduction of our sax player recently has added an even more worldly feel to the sonics of our band, so that has a enables me to change the direction dramatically I can go Places with the songs now, it uses to be just me writings the songs, but I have a horn section now which enables me to create beautiful textures that I wouldn't have been able to do previously.

Can you briefly describe what the song/each song is about? If you are releasing an album then either describe the thinking behind the project or choose a couple of lead tracks to focus on.

My writing style is colloquial in both its form and execution. The opening line sets the tone for the song, depicting someone who has gotten their hopes up only to once again be let down. It is completely atmospheric. We have all been there before, and we are transported there yet again as the track unassumingly unfolds. True to his form ‘IKYWC’ features jazzy instrumentation, dreamy guitar riffs played by Myles himself accompanied by saxophone and a distinctive bass and drum line that completely sets like glue in your head as you find yourself lost and tapping your feet. The structure of the song has poignant lulls and crescendos which weave between the lyrics, giving them all the more sentiment.

Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP? As above, list whatever might be of relevance.

Please provide a one or two-line personal quote that can be attributed to a band member, about either the band themselves or the release. Obviously the more eye-catching this is the better.

Shit happens and you’re the one it happens to. Myles Morgan
