MAY 2019 Professional Producer and sound designer Alex Story is launching his Frightful Ocean project with debut single Little Wave, a bold fusion of electronic, acoustic and cinematic textures tied together with his distinctive baritone and arresting songwriting. Story’s unique history as a young, internationally-touring psychedelic dance producer, turned folk-rock band leader, and now pro synth sound designer, has afforded him a lot to play with: Little Wave sees muted drones morph into crawling synth leads while vintage acoustics meet futuristic bass layers, crescendoing into searing electric guitar explorations.
The song’s impact is amplified further by a music video starring 11-year-old Zazie Hayhurst, embodying the song’s story of a little wave that could grow to wipe out entire cities, as she explores the ruins of a derelict boarding school, battling her demons through swift martial arts choreography.
Shot in grainy black and white by directing duo Mark Arrigo and Steven Chatterton (Dorothy's Theory, Adnan) and edited by Jasper Verhorevoort (Pixie Lott, Frankenstein’s Army), the video’s production and themes of empowerment are set to earn Frightful Ocean a diverse fanbase.
Little Wave was mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer Bryan Wilson (Frightened Rabbit, Wolf Alice) and mastered by John Davis (Led Zeppelin, Amy Winehouse). While self-releasing Little Wave, Story is channeling his hybrid musical vision into the finishing touches of his follow-up tracks, to be released throughout 2019.
