Lara Smiles - The Fightings Over
Updated: Jun 15, 2019
“...pulling squalls of ferocious sound out of her guitar like some industro-pop alchemist,” NME
“Mind Off It is her spikiest confection to date, with hints of electro and industrial, but it doesn’t forget to pack a punchy chorus” Guardian
Lara Smiles releases new single 'Fighting’s Over', out on WonkyPop Records. Self-produced by Smiles and mixed and co-produced by Jamie Grashion (Black Grape, Echo & The Bunnymen).
The sound is a mix of psych rock, with a hint of the punk funk of Bloc Party, with the candy crush of PinkShinyUltraBlast. The electronic mystery of Ladytron accompanies her vocals reminiscent of Beth Ditto (Gossip)
Hyphenated moments and visceral experiences accent a life in flux that tilts into hedonistic abandon. As always cascades of colorful instrumentation, electrifying and enticing signify her sound with the catchiness of a pop hook that draws you in. The Fighting’s Over is brought to life by this dissonant, electrifying video, nervy and edgy, painting the psychological unease of a roller-coaster romance.
Lara Smiles has been building attention from press including NME, who heralded her as the perfect antidote to generic indie boyband. Also gaining interest from the Guardian among online magazines, her guitar-driven, synth-inspired sound, routed in all night raves, has led to this love of meshing the genres and experimenting with samples.
Having performed festivals from Glastonbury, The Great Escape to Isle of Wight Festival. She has supported everyone from indie icon Pete Doherty, featured on the recent Shed Seven album, had a whole song dedicated to her by The Pearl Hearts, ‘Lara’, to collaborating with house pioneers The Orb.
